Water BottleRainwater Collection - Is It Too Large For A Rainwater Collection Barrel
Let's face it, it is very important to know why you're collecting rainwater, in order to know how big a container you need to store it in. If you only have a small lawn water, then the amount that you will collect in a single rainwater barrel would probably be sufficient. If on the other hand you're trying to collect enough water to live independent of any other water source, you'll either need an awful lot of rain barrels, or you'll need a different kind of container. Collecting large quantities of water is not a new idea, as we've had cisterns and large tanks, and even small lakes and ponds that have been used to collect rainwater. Only recently there have been some new techniques for harvesting very large quantities of rain water.
After looking at many rainwater harvesting systems I found the RainXchange the most natural. The video will be necessary to get the full concept, but I'll do the best I can in words. Essentially one digs a large rectangular hole with a very flat level bottom and place milk crate-like boxes in the hole and stack them to form a rectangular space which is wrapped in a waterproof wrapping except for some of the top area. Next you fill the hole back in and landscape the surface with rocks or flagstones and install some decorative fountain which gets its water from this underground storage area. By connecting this to your roof drain system to get a very efficient rainwater harvesting system.
While the above is the most natural of these large collection systems, probably the most unique is The Original Rainwater pillow. They are made with storage capacities ranging 750 gallons to 200,000 gallons and they look at giant waterbed. Though it is generally put under a crawlspace or porch, I've come up with an alternative idea of building a platform box over it and then either use the platform as a patio, or decorated in some way. We are essentially giving our Rainwater pillow a new home which I call a pillow pad.
Now one variation of the traditional rainwater barrel is a thin slimline plastic water tank designed to fit under the eaves of the house and fit snugly together for maximum water storage. Sally Dominguez, an Australian designer and inventor, created the Rainwater HOG, which is probably one of the most noted of these. The rectangular shape of these tanks allows them to fit tightly together, maximizing storage space and yet maintaining a neat appearance. Getting back to the question of why you are collecting rainwater, you need to know why so you can work out how you should do it.. The basic idea behind most of these is to store water while it is abundant so it can be used at a time when it is not abundant. Storm water run-off is one of the major contributors of pollution in our lakes and rivers. Believe it or not collecting the rainwater runoff will help prevent pollution. However to do this you have to collect nearly all the runoff from your roof and property. Hence the 2000 gallon rainwater barrels
Just as an aside, realize, if you added a reverse osmosis water filter to your 'water barrel' system, it might just be possible
to live completely off the rainwater that came off your roof. This water would be better for your gardens and lawns, and when
